"Being denied special education services for bipolar chi"
| |
Hi, I've not posted on here before, but could really use some advice. I have an 11 year old daughter diagnosed with bipolar and ADD last year. I have tried to get her into special education but keep getting denied by the schools insisting that she does not have an educational need. Last year she missed nearly 3 months of school due to anxiety and school refusal. She struggles with dysgraphia, though no one has testing her on this. The school only did testing for learning disability, but showed no evidence to support the need. I could use any information anyone can give me to help support our case on this. Thanks, Jackie Jackie |

Here's a lawyer blog on this topic that you'll find interesting: http://www.connecticutspecialeducationlawyer.com/tips-for-parents/emotional-disabilities-under-the-idea/ Schools often don't know what to do about students who are getting by academically and are not disruptive. It sounds like the school didn't evaluate your daughter fully — they sometimes look only for a learning disability, but they need to be assessing your daughter's social, emotional, and behavioral functioning as well. Anxiety takes many forms, and there are various interventions that can help, but it depends on the nature of the type of anxiety. Here's a website that gives many helpful suggestions, from accommodations to therapeutic interventions (which can be worked on at home, at school, in therapy): http://www.schoolpsychiatry.org/

Wow! I can totally relate to how you feel right now! Don''t let them get away with that! Best advice I EVER got when I was in your shoes: www.Advocacyinc.com And here's a little something that the school districts don't want you to know: You are entitled to an advocate at the schools expense! If your child suffers from a disorder that interferes with or impedes their learning you are entitled to special education services. Bipolar children usually qualify under the coding "Other health impaired" or "emotionally disturbed". Contact an advocate! They will get things moving. P.S. if you request evaluation and testing for qualification for special education based on a disorder (non-learning) that interferes with the childs education they have 60 days to complete that request. They dont have the option of telling you no, so be more forceful, and contact an ADVOCATE, they will be forceful for you!!! -Dani |
