"lithium/zyprexa and effects on growth and development"

Has anyone experienced any growth or puberty delays with their child on lithium or zyprexa?
My son is 14 and has not shown any evidence of puberty yet. His classmates are getting taller, their voices are changing, and most, if not all of them, have at least some body hair. My son has stopped growing, and shows no signs of puberty at all. He has always been emotionally immature, but this physical delay has me worried. He took lithium and zyprexa from age 7 to 12. Has anyone ever heard of this? Help pleezz!!!!!!!!!

I've never heard of any bipolar medications delaying puberty, but I suppose anything is possible. I did a quick search on the internet and came up empty. It could be nothing, but since you're worried, I'd say it's time for a check-up. A pediatrician will refer your son for further testing or to a specialist if that seems appropriate.

I would not be overly worried. I have three sons. My youngest, who has been on heavy meds since 11 and on lithium since 14 actually onset into puberty earlier than his brothers. #2 really didn't start showing signs till 16 or so. They're very individual. But I agree with the above posting that if you're concerned you should check with your doctor.

   Hi,
I am new to this group. My son (11) has been taking Lithium since he was 4 years old and is reporting to me weekly on new puberty indicators ("Mom, I am growing armpit hairs," and "Mom, I reek!").
You might just be seeing an individual difference in growth/maturity rather than a problem, but it is a good idea to follow up as others have suggested.

Thank you,
HarryPotter7

Is he having routine thyroid evaluations while on lithium? This may be a place to start. If that's OK, I think it's OK to chalk it up to his uniqueness and wait a bit longer before pursuing more answers
