"Nothing seems to work anymore."

LAST EDITED ON 07-31-10 AT 03:20 AM (EST)
Hello. I am new at this forum. I decided to join this forum because I am hopeless. I have been treating my son since he was 2 yrs. old and was first diagnosed as ADHD and ODD. At the begining I was treating him with psycological therapy and natural remedies such as Valerian, Chamomile, Omega 3-6,etc. Eventually everything stopped working and my son became more anxious, aggressive, depressed and worst of all suicidal. Finally, after many visits to different psychiatrists, our current dr. made the JBPD diagnosis. He's been through so many medications and nothing seems to work for him. He's tried antidepressants, antianxiety and medication for ADD. Everything affects him adversly. Either he becomes more depressed to the point of suicidal or more aggressive to the point of being a threat to himself or me. The only medication that has worked a little is Risperidone. But lately, this medication has stopped working and he's having anger outbursts. He says he is in so much pain he can not stand it anymore. He is only 12 yrs. old. His psych. recentlly prescribed SAPHRIS 5mg (Schering-Plough) but he's affraid of changes. When he's not "sick", he's the most affectionate, loving, social kid. And is so smart... But does not care for school at all. Someone help us, please!! Any advise will be greatly appreciated. I love my son, I don't want to lose him. (Dear God, I trust you w/ this message) |

What a sad, difficult situation. Perhaps with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, your new doctor will look more carefully at mood stabilization and approach antidepressants and stimulants in a new way. It will also be important to let the doctor know of any complementary and alternative treatments you are implementing so that medication trials and other treatments do not skew the results. I don't think many pdocs have much training in nutrition or alternative treatments, which makes it tough for you and the pdoc to partner with traditional meds and alternatives. You might want to look into specialty clinics that look into the whole body metabolism such as this one: http://www.hriptc.org/index.php. I am not vouching for this particular health center; I have never been there and don't know anyone who has, but it seems like an approach that might appeal to you.
