Update Forthcoming
A standardized diagnostic interview and psychiatric evaluation
is needed for all JBRF funded studies of juvenile bipolar disorder.
This evaluation will include ascertainment of DSM-IVR diagnoses,
including co-morbid conditions as screening of all volunteers.
Patients will be diagnosed according to four different sets of
diagnostic criteria, including: DSM-IVR; NIMH-modified DSM-IVR (modified);
DSM-IVR (broad); intermediate and narrow phenotypes, and core phenotypes.
All individuals referred for any JBRF study undergo the following:
- Self-report demographic and symptomatic inventories
- Standardized diagnostic assessment
- Clinical interview with case formulation
- Expert consensus diagnosis
At the conclusion of this evaluation process, recommendation may
be made for inclusion in one of the JBRF-funded research studies.
Method:
Self-Report Demographic and Symptom Inventories
There are three likely sources of referrals for JBRF sponsored
studies:
- Via JBRF Website
- Through private practitioners who participate on the professional
listserv
- Self-referred individuals
Those having access to the Internet will be directed to the research
section of the JBRF web site, and asked to complete demographic
and symptomatic inventories via interactive questionnaires. This
information will be collected and archived in a database. For those
individuals without Internet access, a set of questionnaires will
be faxed or mailed by a research assistant, and entered into the
database when received.
Parents with Internet access, and whose children meet initial criteria
will be asked to complete an online screener which is the second
step in the evaluation process.
Standardized Diagnostic Assessment
After obtaining Informed Consent, a research assistant trained
in the use of the K-SADS P/L (a standardized diagnostic instrument)
will administer this interview, score the results and enter them
in the database. Parent/s and child will be interviewed. This interview
will require 4-5 hours of time.
Consensus Diagnosis
Upon review of all information collected, a panel of clinical
psychiatrists will reach a consensus diagnosis.
